Feel Good in 5 Minutes Audio Program

How one mom learned the importance and power of stress reduction and self-care...from her son

After you read this, you'll never again think
taking care of yourself is "selfish"

One night, not too long ago, as I was leaving my son’s room after tucking him in to bed, I accidentally stepped on one of his lego cars and the car broke apart. Although my son knew it was an accident, he was very upset because it was a complicated car to build and he doubted whether he could recreate it again.

I apologized and promised that we would sit down and work on rebuilding it in the morning. After that, I left and proceeded to make a phone call. Well, while I was on the phone, my son got up to find me. He was still upset. When he noticed that I was in the middle of my call, he grabbed a notebook that I had just given him, pulled out his markers, and proceeded to write and draw in his notebook. I ended my call just as he had finished up what he was doing.

When I asked him why he was up (it was nearly 10:00!) he said that he got up because he was sad about his car breaking, and he wanted me to console and comfort him.

Here is where it gets really interesting

My son told me when he saw that I was on the phone and therefore not available to console him in that moment, he decided that he would make himself feel better by writing about his feelings and drawing a picture of what happened in his notebook.

I couldn’t believe my ears! And when I asked him if it had worked, he responded with an exuberant “Yes”!

Now where do you think he got the idea that writing out his feelings would help him feel better? While I believe in the power of journaling to help us deal with the stress, anger, and other emotions that we deal with, I had certainly never preached to him about this. The only explanation I could come up with for his choice to journal, was that he had observed me doing it and decided that if it could work for me, perhaps it could work for him too!

When my son sees me taking care of myself, he learns how to take care of himself too!

After observing my son utilizing one of my favorite self-care practices, I finally understood this important truth:

When we take care of ourselves, by default we take care of everyone we come into contact with.

So, how about you? Are you modeling good self-care for your family? Take this brief test to find out:

  • Do you do do do for others almost constantly, whether it is for your boss, your kids, your spouse, your ex, your home, but almost never find time to do for yourself?
  • Do you feel stressed, and as a result find yourself less patient with the people in your life that you most care about?
  • Do you feel trapped by responsibilities with seemingly no easy way to get back to feeling like yourself again?
  • Do you ever wish you could have even just a few minutes for some “me” time?
  • Do you think it is selfish to spend time on self-care?
  • Do you see your kids getting stressed out but feel helpless to do anything about it?

If you answered “yes” to even just one of these questions, then you are likely in need of some self-care.

I know how you feel, as I’ve been there myself, more times than I care to admit. While I do engage in stress reduction activities, I admit I’m not as consistent as I should be. But when my son showed me the positive impact my own stress reduction and self-care activities had on his ability to feel empowered to take care of himself, I finally understood how important it is for parents to engage in their own self-care.

You see, when you are feeling drained, spent, stressed, whatever you want to call it, you have nothing good to give to anyone. Just like a car that stops running when it is out of gasoline, you don’t function well when you don’t stop and fill up your tank with the goodness that fills your soul. Once you take care of yourself, you are that much more capable of bringing all of you to those that you love and care about. What we do for ourselves has a ripple effect out to everyone we come in contact with, and everyone that they come in contact with, and so on.

The good news is this: Not only is self-care beneficial for all those we come into contact with, but the positive effects of just a little bit of self-care are fairly straightforward and simple to achieve. In fact, you can engage in self-care and feel wonderful benefits in as little as 5 minutes!

As a result, I’ve created a program that will allow you to greatly enhance your sense of well-being and leave you feeling much more calm, present, and more like your true self once again. And when you engage in activities that help you feel better, you will model for your children how they can do it too!
